The High-Luminosity Upgrade for the LHC is rapidly approaching and the CMS experiment is undergoing fundamental changes to take advantage of the new physics possibilities offered by the collider’s upgrade. In this context, the event reconstruction, both offline and at the High-Level Trigger (HLT), is undergoing significant changes to fully exploit the detectors’ upgrades while aiming to maintain remarkable performance under harsh data-taking conditions: roughly 200 proton-proton collisions take place at every HL-LHC bunch crossing. This contribution focuses on the tracking of muons at HLT. As one of the pillars of triggering at CMS, the online muon reconstruction exploits measurements in all sub-detectors, from the inner tracker to the dedicated muon system. The entire reconstruction workflow will be discussed, highlighting the changes put into effect for the Upgrade, with a particular focus on the usage of novel detectors and the possibilities offered by heterogeneous event reconstruction at the CMS HLT.
